Comments: It was a damp and gloomy June this year in Fairhaven. Precip total was well above average yet there were no days with over an inch. Sixteen days were judged to be predominately overcast. Overall there were 15 days with measurable rainfall, well over the average of 10, and there were fourteen days with foggy conditions. There were five days with thunder… A cooler than average June this year. The average daily mean temperature of 65.0 degrees is the coolest June since 2009 and the 10th coolest in the past 50 years. For most of the first three weeks of the month nighttime lows were in the low to mid 50’s. On just two days this month did the daytime high reach the 80-degree mark… Poor air quality was an issue at times this month with smoke from Canadian wildfires polluting the air and obscuring visibility. The worst day being the 6th with the smoke being easily visible at ground level.

Comments: A very nice May to round out the 2023 Spring season. The month featured slightly below average temperatures with below normal, but ample rainfall. Total precipitation was on the light side this month with only 5 days recorded with measurable rainfall. The month started out with an intense low pressure system passing through the area leaving 0.59″ of rain and wind gusts exceeding 30 mph. The barometer bottomed-out at 29.01″ on the 1st day of the month. An overnight soaker arrived on the night of the 20th and ended on the morning of the 21st leaving 1.74″ of precip behind… The average daily mean temperature of 57.0 degrees is 0.4 degrees below the monthly average. It was the first cooler than normal month since September of last year. Warm days and cool nights prevailed for most of the month. The only exception being the morning of the 18th when a blast of Canadian air dropped the overnight temperature to, or slightly below the freezing mark. Area apple and peach growers are hopeful that any damage to their crops was minimal… The skies were judged to be prominently clear on thirteen days, even though there were many days the skies were partially obscured by haze and smoke from Canadian wildfires…
The SPRING SEASON was warm with below average precipitation. The average temperature of 49.4 degrees was the warmest Spring since 2012. The low temperature for the season was 25F, the 2nd highest low temperature on record (26F in 1977). Total precip for the season was 10.30″, 2.31″ below average. The 24-hour max was 1.74″ on May 20-21. Just 0.2″ of snow this Spring was the 2nd lowest total on record (trace in 2021).

Comments: A very warm month with the precipitation total close to the monthly average. The average daily mean temperature of 50.9 degrees ranks as the 2nd warmest for April on record, surpassed only by 51.2 degrees in the April of 1976. The monthly average temperature was boosted by a mid-month preview of summer. From the 12th of the month through the 16th, the temperature for those five days averaged more than 15 degrees above normal… It was relatively dry until the final two days of the month when a double- barreled system dropped more than two inches of rain… The last freezing temperature of the season most likely occurred on the 9th, a bit earlier than usual. Note that we have not had a last freeze date in the month of May since 2001… A very foggy month with 14 days observed.

Comments: A warmer than normal December with precipitation total higher than average. Seven days this month had high temps in the 50’s. The coldest period came on Christmas Eve and Day with a high of 28F and a low of 9F… On the 23rd an intense sou’easter with heavy rain and strong winds, coupled with predicted astronomical high tides brought coastal flooding to some low-lying areas of town at the time of high tide… Hardly any snowfall this December, just a few days with some ocean effect flurries. Took out the magnifying glass and was able to measure a tenth of an inch on the snowboard on the 12th.

Comments: A very warm August with tropical humidity levels at times. The average daily mean temperature of 75.0 degrees is the 2nd warmest August on record, surpassed only by August 2018. A five day heat wave from the 5th through the 9th equals the longest heat wave ever recorded at this station. During the heat wave period, the lowest overnight temperature recorded was 74F… Predominately dry conditions continued into August. It was the 4th consecutive month with below average precip. The area remained in the extreme drought (D3) category for the entire month. 3.25 inches of precipitation this month did provide a bit of relief but about 75% of that precipitation occurred during two fast moving thunderstorm events… The Summer Season was very warm and very dry. The average summer temperature of 72.3 degrees is the 2nd warmest summer on record. Ten 90-degree-days is the 2nd highest amount on record (eleven in the summer 2002)… It was the 6th driest summer on record (since 1992). Comments: Drier than normal precipitation and temperatures slightly below average provided some very pleasant weather this June. 2.56 inches of rain this month is just 69% of normal and is the driest month of the year so far. 1.34 inches on the 8th and 9th combined to offer some relief from the moderate drought the area was experiencing but the remainder of the month produced just barely another inch… Comfortably warm, but not hot temperatures with generally low humidity readings provided some delightful conditions. Only three days with any fog reflected the low humidity conditions.

The bulk of the rain came on the 1st and 2nd when the remnants of Hurricane Ida passed over southern New England. The storm left a total of 6.17 inches of rain and some gusty winds. The 24 hour precip total of 6.17″ ranks as the 4th highest on record since 1992 (#1, 7.21″ on August 9-10, 1992)… Average daily mean temperature of 66.7F ranks as the 5th warmest September on record. Unusually high dew points kept many overnight low temps uncomfortably high. Just one day this month had a high temperature in the 80’s (80F on the 15th).

Comments: A warmer than average month with precip close to normal this August in Fairhaven. The average daily mean temperature of 73.5F was 1.8 degrees above August’s average and ranks 10th warmest of the 48 on record. A cool start to the month with the first week averaging 4 degrees below normal but then warm and humid conditions took over for most of the rest of the month. The average high temperature was 0.9 degrees below average; the average low temp 2.7 degrees above average is a telling stat indicating the humid conditions we had this month… Hurricane Henri made landfall at Westerly, RI, about 55 miles west of Fairhaven as a strong tropical storm on the 22nd. In spite of the slow moving storm stalling over southern New England for about 3 days, just 0.75 inches of rain was measured for the storm. We did have a 33mph wind gust… The summer season was on the dry side with temperatures close to normal. About 80% of summers here have at least one 90-degree-day. Comments: A much cooler than average month this year in Fairhaven. Average daily mean temperature of 70.6F is the coolest July since 2009 and ranks the 9th coolest of 47. Humidity levels were certainly uncomfortable at times but the lack of any 90-degree-days made things tolerable for the most part… The month got off to a wet start but after Tropical Storm Elsa passed through southeastern New England on the 9th things dried out, at least around here. While other areas is New England were setting monthly precipitation records, precip totals here were a shade below normal. There were 14 days with measurable precipitation this month, but just 3 of those days had 0.25″ or more and 9 days had less than 0.10″. TS Elsa passed through here with 33mph wind gusts and 0.72″ of rain… Air Quality Alerts were posted on several days for smoke and haze transported from Canadian and western US wildfires. Some people reported an odor of “burnt plastic”… Many foggy days this month.

Comments: A warm and dry June this year. Just 1.66 inches of rain this month ranks 5 of 30, driest to wettest. It did rain on 10 days this month but the amounts were small. The rainiest day of the month was the 14th with 0.44″ recorded… Overall the month was warm. Average daily mean temp of 68.1F ranked 9th warmest of 48 on record. The two warmest periods of the month were on the 6th – 9th which averaged 10 degrees above average, and the 27th – 30th which was 7.5 degrees above. While much of the region was recording heat waves during these periods the prevailing southwest sea breezes helped to moderate the the temperatures here in Fairhaven. The humidity levels were much higher during the late month period.

Comments: While most of southern New England had precip amounts at or above average, the south coast region felt cheated with rainfall totals below average for the month. Here 3.15 inches is nearly an inch below average. The month ranked 11 of 29, driest to wettest. The 2021 total is now running a 5 inch deficit and for the last 12 months we are a whopping 14 inches below normal… As usual for April, temperatures ran the gambit with some warm days and some days very cold. The final tally for the month was exactly at the monthly average. Probably the final freezing temperature of the season occurred on the 22nd, about 10 days later than average.
